The Rings of Power season 3 is official: Gandalf returns

Prime Video has locked in a date for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 3. It premieres November 11, 2026, and Gandalf is back after Daniel Weyman’s season 2 reveal finally confirmed what the show had been circling for a while: The Stranger was the wizard all along.

Fresh San Diego Comic-Con banners offer the clearest look yet at Weyman as Gandalf the Grey. The pointed hat is there. So is the staff, and the whole design sits much closer to Peter Jackson’s version than what viewers had seen before. The banners also make something else pretty clear: Prime Video is done playing coy with the identity twist and is handling Gandalf far more openly in season 3. The new season is expected to jump forward several years into the War of the Elves and Sauron, put Sauron’s forging of the One Ring in Mount Doom at the center, and push the series into darker, larger-scale territory. The showrunners have already described that Ring sequence as one of the most ambitious technical set pieces they’ve tried on the show. Early concept art points in another interesting direction too, suggesting Gandalf may get pulled into major action, possibly in a sequence involving a Mûmak from Harad.

If you’ve been following The Rings of Power, this matters because it answers the Gandalf question directly at a time when the show’s Second Age timeline changes are still splitting fans and Tolkien scholars. Some critics see Gandalf’s place in this era as a straight-up break from the lore. Defenders, on the other hand, keep pointing to Tolkien’s later notes and to the showrunners’ wider adaptation aims.
