Updated: EA have confirmed that The Sims 4 will be released in 2014, for PC and Mac.

EA has registered the domain The Sims 4, planned a conference call, and its Russian Twitter account has been teasing that something will be announced this week.

The Sims 3 came out in 2009, so a new title is definitely due. The Sims Russia Twitter account has hinted twice about upcoming Sims 4 news. The first tweet said, ‘want something new? Next week, life will change, Sims fans.’ This was followed by ‘do you like to play online with your friends?‘.

Today there’s a special Sims event that some Sims fan sites have been invited to attend. The invitation promises a big announcement about the series: coupled with the now active Sims 4 domain, it seems likely The Sims 4 will be the news.

The second tweet about online play might be cause for concern – this has been a bad year so far for EA and online games. SimCity’s release and gameplay was seriously damaged by an ‘always online’ requirement. The Sims 4 will have to do much better if it hopes to avoid that controversy, as it has a similarly enthusiastic and passionate fan base.

We’ll update you as soon as we know more about The Sims 4.
