It may be that Rick and Morty is no longer what it used to be, when everyone had heard of Pickle Rick, wore t-shirts with motifs from the series, and even made McDonald’s relaunch the Mulan Sichuan sauce after an episode.

However, time passes for everyone, and the series, despite being in its 9th season, does not have the social acclaim it once had. However, this is not a problem for its channel, Adult Swim, which continues to exploit it as much as it can: after all, they are its de facto mascots. And yes, I know how strange it sounds for Rick Sanchez to be the mascot of anything.

Wabba-labba-dub-dub-sensei!

But the truth is that, although there are only 84 episodes, Rick and Morty has dozens of short and long format spin-offs that not all fans have heard of. For example, between 2016 and 2021 Adult Swim released a whopping 36 shorts parodying movies like The Matrix, A Clockwork Orange, or Poltergeist, made with clay and lasting just 20 seconds each.

These continued with shorts in different audiovisual styles, such as Bushworld Adventures, which lasted a good 11 minutes, the pixelated and highly recommended Rick + Morty in the Eternal Nightmare Machine, which is practically another episode, or Summer’s Sleepover, also made with clay and lasting 10 minutes.

In total, just with the previous shorts, you have more than 45 minutes of material that very few have seen, but it gets even better, because there is a whole series that fans have ignored: Rick and Morty, the anime. After 5 different short films directed by Japanese creators and with the original language in Japanese, Adult Swim gave the green light to make a season of 10 episodes in anime style that was completely on its own.

It was a moderate success (although some considered it completely unnecessary) and received the promise of a second season. Hey, while we’re at it, why not. Adding this, we already total 5 hours and 15 minutes of Rick and Morty spin-offs. Not bad at all.

But the crown jewel is perhaps the most hidden, because it is only for the biggest fans. Did you know there is a whole series about the Vindicators titled Vindicators 2: Last Stand Between Earth and Doom that premiered directly on YouTube? Just as it sounds. After the success of the episode Vindicators 3, a prequel of 10 episodes of about 3 minutes each was made in 2022. In total, we are talking about another 30 minutes to add up to a total of 5 hours and 45 minutes of Rick and Morty spin-offs, to which you can add all kinds of comics, video games, and even virtual reality experiences if you want. May the money-making machine never stop.

But the thing doesn’t end here, of course: they are already preparing their next spin-off, based on President Curtis. No one has asked for it, no one is interested, but they keep making these series, so, as strange as it may seem at first, they must be working like a charm. And, given that they have already confirmed that there will be a Rick and Morty movie… Is it possible that the series isn’t doing as badly or isn’t as doomed as its haters claim? Because for now, the only thing that seems crystal clear is that Dan Harmon doesn’t have to make the Community movie: he can dedicate himself to making Rick and Morty for the rest of his life. ¡Wubba-lubba-dub-dub!
