The third season of The Last of Us is delayed due to an unforeseen enemy: the World Cup

The Last of Us is one of HBO’s most popular series in recent times, but it has been plagued by production issues. Changes in its showrunners, various controversies, and the changes from the video games have accompanied them from the beginning. Now, they are facing an even stranger and more noticeable problem. Despite what they had planned, their third season will have to be delayed due to the World Cup.

A series with problems

Due to the FIFA World Cup 2026 being held from June 11 in Mexico, Canada, and the United States, with one of its venues being Vancouver, the location where The Last of Us is filmed, they have decided to halt production, at least for the duration of this sporting event. Whether this will affect the production plans for the season is unknown, which is planned to extend its filming throughout 2026, until the end of 2026, with the aim of releasing the series sometime in the second half of 2027.

Meanwhile, the series has given us a little joy, as it has announced a new casting. Peter Sarsgaard will join the cast of the series as Amon, leader of the seraphites, a very important antagonistic group in the second installment of the video games. Although we do not know more details about his character, his role should be somewhat significant in the plot if they develop what happened in the games.

For its part, this third season will see some important changes. Being probably the last of the series and the first without its original creator, Neil Druckmann, creator of the original video game franchise, will face the challenge not only of closing the series but of doing so without the man who knows it best. In any case, it seems they still have more than enough time to make everything fit. Especially now that, thanks to football, they have a few weeks of planned or unplanned vacation.
