The X-Files’ “Home” is still terrifying nearly 30 years on

The X-Files episode “Home” aired on October 11, 1996. Nearly thirty years later, it still feels like the scariest hour the series ever put on television.

It’s season 4, episode 2, written by Glen Morgan and James Wong, with Kim Manners directing. The case sends Fox Mulder and Dana Scully to Home, Pennsylvania, after the burial of a severely deformed newborn points them toward the Peacock family: three violent brothers living on a collapsing rural property, surrounded by generations of inbreeding, abuse, infanticide, and plain brutality. No paranormal hook, no supernatural reveal.

That’s what made “Home” land so hard. Not aliens. Not ghosts. Just cruelty that feels horribly possible. Fox treated it that way too: it got the only TV-MA rating in The X-Files’ run, carried a viewer-discretion warning, pulled in 18.85 million viewers, split critics, and then disappeared from reruns until a Halloween airing in 1999.

If you come to The X-Files for standalone horror, “Home” is still one to seek out. The episode later turned into a top-10 fan favorite, and it plays like a rotten send-up of small-town family values, class anxiety, and social decay. The story pulled from Brother’s Keeper and Charlie Chaplin’s autobiography, and while a sequel came up in discussion, it never happened.

You’ll find “Home” as The X-Files season 4, episode 2, wherever the series is streaming or available.
