The X-Files: I Want to Believe gets a darker Director’s Cut, now streaming

Starting Aug. 14, 2026, The X-Files: I Want to Believe got a new streaming update in the form of a director’s cut, The X-Files: I Want to Believe – Vrach Frankenshteyn. It gives viewers the leaner, darker, more horror-forward version Chris Carter says he wanted all along. On Variety’s Daily Variety podcast with Michael Schneider, Carter said the 2008 theatrical release was steered toward a PG-13 rating, so some of the graphic material was dialed back and more attention was put on Mulder and Scully’s relationship, rather than the stranger, creepier movie he had in mind.

The X-Files: I Want to Believe – Vrach Frankenshteyn cuts down the runtime, pushes the Frankenstein-like body-horror mystery further to the front, tones down the romantic subplot, and even swaps in a subtitle that fits the movie’s genre a lot better. The original didn’t land especially well back in 2008, so if you’ve long thought studio notes kept it from becoming the weirder, nastier version it could’ve been, this new edit is probably worth a look. That said, the early response has been mixed, and some viewers feel the changes are more incremental than truly transformative.

This new cut is arriving just as Ryan Coogler’s X-Files reboot keeps moving ahead, with Jennifer Yale set as showrunner and Chris Carter staying involved as an executive producer. You can stream The X-Files: I Want to Believe – Vrach Frankenshteyn now on Hulu, and it’s up on Disney+ too.
