Netflix has shone a big spotlight on its big premieres of the year. After a decade of releasing all kinds of series, it knows the formula for success and usually anticipates what its audience wants. However, every year there are some series that surprise everyone, ranking among the top viewed on the platform, to the surprise of Netflix itself.
This year, the big surprise has undoubtedly been Baby Reindeer. However, this isn’t the only Netflix hit turning heads, and now another surprising project has just made it to the top. Supacell, a British series that achieved a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes after its premiere on June 27th, managed to make it to the top of Netflix. Currently, it’s the second most-watched series on Netflix, only behind the unbeatable Bridgerton.
Why should you watch Supacell as soon as possible?
In the form of a mini-series of just six episodes, Supacell tells the story of five ordinary people from South London who, without knowing how, unexpectedly develop extraordinary powers. Among the five, there seems to be no connection except that they’re all Afro-descendant, so they’ll have to come together to uncover the mystery that surrounds all of it. Starring Michael Salami, Eddie Marsan, Adelayo Adelayo, and Travis Jay, it’s a fiction like no other right now.

With the addition of a damsel in distress whom they must save, Supacell manages to surprise in a way that few others on Netflix do. And it’s not based on a comic book; rather, it’s a completely original plot that’s been created to work as a miniseries. Unfortunately, because of that, it doesn’t seem like it will have a sequel… but with the platform’s successes, you never know.
