In 1976, the Marvel Universe was growing nonstop: new characters, new plots, new enemies, new adventures with Stan Lee at the helm, who ran the editorial department with an iron fist. Only in this context does it make sense that Marv Wolfman was able to sneak Nova in, a character he had created some time earlier for a fanzine, and that became one of the publisher’s flagship characters and remains one to this day… And it’s about to get a major update.
To Space and Beyond!
In all these years, Nova has crossed paths with every superhero there is, has passed the mantle to Sam Alexander, and has had time to get involved with Gamora and Namorita. Obviously, the MCU wanted to adapt him as soon as possible, especially after the success of Guardians of the Galaxy, but the project has spent a decade on the shelf, confirmed and denied over the years… until now.
And so, after years of back and forth, we finally know who’ll be in charge of getting Nova off the ground: Michael Waldron, who already got Loki off the ground and has helped make Avengers: Doomsday a reality. Although last year it was said that Marvel had abandoned the character along with Strange Academy and Terror Inc, it now seems to be giving him another shot. After all, who’d say no to Waldron?
Is it possible that Marvel Studios will announce the Nova series at the next Comic-Con as part of its new post-Secret Wars phase? For now, the only thing we knew about the previous version of the series was that Rider rebuilt the Nova Corps and was supposed to face Annihilus. Whether the new script has started from scratch or used this as a starting point is something we won’t know for a while, but, with luck, we’ll know before we take to the skies.
