Of all the animes that will premiere in spring 2026, few have generated as much anticipation as Daemons of the Shadow Realm; not only was it an adaptation of Hiromu Arakawa’s latest manga, the creator of the legendary manga Fullmetal Alchemist, but it was also another production by Bones Film that even brought together part of the team from Fullmetal Alchemist, so it had all the ingredients to become a great success from the moment it was announced.
Now that the spring 2026 anime season is in full swing, Daemons of the Shadow Realm has finally had its world premiere and, as expected, it lives up to the hype.
Naturally, much of this is due to the incredible artistic work and animation used to bring the series to life, but like Fullmetal Alchemist before it, and even Silver Spoon and The Heroic Legend of Arslan, what makes Daemons of the Shadow Realm by Bones Film so captivating is its script, especially with the absolutely crazy twist surrounding its premise.
Daemons Of The Shadow Realm starts incredibly
Regarding the scenario of Daemons of the Shadow Realm, the most obvious assumption one could make is that it is a historical setting, and it’s easy to see why. Not only do Yuru and other characters dress as if they lived in ancient times (Yuru also wields a bow and arrows), but the central theme of spirits and guardian entities also gives the impression of being something ancient, so it would make sense for it to be that type of story.
However, in a surprising twist, that couldn’t be further from the truth, as before episode 1 of Daemons of the Shadow Realm even reaches the halfway point, it is revealed that, although Yuru and her village live as if they were in Sengoku era Japan, in the rest of the world it is the present time, and many characters wear modern clothing and also use helicopters, mobile phones, and firearms.
It is true that some of those things could be seen in the trailers, but they received very little attention, so one could forgive someone for forgetting them or simply not noticing them.
Probably, Daemons of the Shadow Realm would have worked perfectly as a simple historical fantasy anime, but by secretly setting it in the present, it captivates viewers with a mind-blowing twist from the start and promises a much more original narrative than they expected. The series was already destined to be one of the biggest hits of the season, but after that incredible twist, it will somehow be even better.
Will Daemons Of The Shadow Realm be the most important anime of the season?
Any anime from the creator of Fullmetal Alchemist will always be promoted as something everyone should watch, and as it stands now, Daemons of the Shadow Realm is more than up to the task, not only for its magnificent visual effects but also for the stellar script that accompanies it, and that includes the plot twist that ties it all together.
There are few animes more exciting than Daemons of the Shadow Realm right now, and let’s hope it only grows and improves over time. Are you in to watch it? It’s only on Crunchyroll.
