Oh, the tough life of a talented, young, and handsome Hollywood actor. What a nightmare! Poor Tom Holland! He is behind the mask of the world’s most popular superhero, has a relationship with Zendaya, can choose any movie he wants, and on top of that, he receives critical acclaim. To make matters worse, the opportunity he had to be a bit of a rogue, as we have now learned, ended up benefiting him! There are people who go through life on easy mode, what the hell.
The Odyssey of Spidey
If you’re Holland, you can afford to pick up the phone and have conversations that no one else would. This was his case when he was cast for The Odyssey and found out that it would delay the filming of the Marvel blockbuster, as he himself acknowledges: “I told Chris, ‘Look, I want to do this movie, but if I’m going to do it, I have to call Sony and have a very uncomfortable conversation’. And that’s exactly what he did.
In their defense, they didn’t take it so badly. “I think one of the reasons Sony moved the shooting date was because Chris has that reputation of ‘This movie is not going to last five more months, and we are not going to lose Tom for two years’. With any other director, it would have been a slightly different conversation.” It is worth noting that the filming of The Odyssey finished 9 days early. That’s called preparation.
Is the height of good luck? The bravado worked out so well that Sony even had time to hire the perfect director, Destin Daniel Cretton: “The Odyssey almost saved Spider-Man because we wouldn’t have had Destin. We wouldn’t have been ready to make the movie when we were ready. We wouldn’t have had these six months to develop the script with Destin and take it to where it is now. And I truly believe that we have made the best version of any Spider-Man movie. So it was a hard pill to swallow for Sony but I think they are very grateful that it happened”. Life goes better when you swing between success and success, definitely. Ah! Both will premiere this summer, so let’s make it even better: Tom Holland’s summer is coming!
