Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is official: it’s not a straight remake

Lara Croft is heading back to where it all started. Crystal Dynamics has officially unveiled Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, a new take on the 1996 Tomb Raider that made Lara one of gaming’s defining characters, ahead of its February 12, 2027 release. This one isn’t being pitched as a beat-for-beat remake, either. Crystal Dynamics is calling it a love letter to the original, built to celebrate the series’ 30th anniversary.

Flying Wild Hog is co-developing, with Amazon Game Studios handling publishing. Crystal Dynamics says players will still run into plenty of familiar moments, but Legacy of Atlantis isn’t just the old game with cleaner textures laid over it. Traversal has been updated. Combat has too. So have the visuals and the way the story is told.

The game launches February 12, 2027 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. Crystal Dynamics also says it’s being built in Unreal Engine 5.

It also feels like part of a much bigger Tomb Raider push. Tomb Raider I-III Remastered reportedly did better than expected in 2024. Crystal Dynamics is also working on Tomb Raider: Catalyst, the post-Survivor Trilogy follow-up, after the series went without a mainline entry since 2018. And even after Embracer Group’s restructuring and cuts, the company still appears to see Tomb Raider as one of its key long-term franchises. So if you’ve been waiting for Lara Croft to properly step back into the spotlight, Legacy of Atlantis looks like one to keep an eye on. You’ll be able to play it on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2 in 2027.
