The film is still being screened in Japanese theaters despite its initial release in May 2022, and it has become Tom Cruise’s highest-grossing film in the country, raking in a whopping $101.5 million.
In doing so, the movie has surpassed Cruise’s 2003 film, The Last Samurai, which was a massive hit in Japan. This milestone is significant, placing Top Gun: Maverick as the second highest-grossing film of 2022, only behind the monumental success of Avatar: The Waterbender. There is no doubt that this achievement even opens up the possibility of a potential Top Gun 3 in the future, although considering the long wait for the second installment, it may not seem too realistic.
