Top new apps: what to download this week

Here’s a round-up of the best mobile apps we tested on Softonic this week. Check them out now!

Virtual Villagers: Origins

If we’re honest, we’ve all spent hours in front of a mirror pretending to be the leader of a village. Now you don’t need to daydream anymore, because this iOS app puts you in the hotseat of your own settlement. The idea of Virtual Villagers: Origins, based on a popular PC game, is to take a group of villagers and motivate and train them to build up the village. Your little pueblo will keep growing even when you’re not playing the game!

iOS

Opera Mini Next

Opera Mini is one of our favorite mobile web browsers, and the new version will make it even quicker and easier to access the web on your phone. Opera Mini Next serves as a preview to the new version, and is now available for Symbian, BlackBerry and Android devices, as well as Java. It includes a slick new start page for fast access to social networks, an unlimited number of speed dial sites, and an altogether smoother browsing experience.

The Daily Show Headlines

If you can’t get to a TV set then The Daily Show Headlines makes for a great way to keep up with Jon Stewart’s shenanigans on the go. Although it doesn’t have full episodes, the app includes clips from the popular show, which you can browse via a simple interface. The main page is well organized by date, and there’s a button on the right of each video to share with Twitter, Facebook, text and email.

Android

Line Camera

Apps like Instagram and Hipstamatic have sparked a wave of photo effects apps for phones. Line Camera is one of the best we’ve seen for a while, allowing you to quickly customize your snaps with text, stamps and effects. The idea of the app is to take pictures and then add filter effects to the image. After applying the filter you can add different cartoon stamps to the picture. You can choose from a selection of characters, and even add glasses!

Android

EA Battlelog

Many Battlefield 3 fans find it hard to leave the field of combat to return to the mundaneness of real life. Install EA Battlelog on your iPhone and you’ll always have access to your Battlefield 3 stats. Besides offering all your performance stats of your soldiers, the app gives you real-time notifications of your friends’ progress in the game, the ability to see who’s playing right now, and leaderboards where you can compare your standing among your friends, and across the whole world!

iOS

Kinect Star Wars

If you’re into Star Wars this is a must-have app for your Windows Phone device. It transforms the look of your Facebook and Twitter apps, adding a cool Star Wars skin. Essentially, the stylish background image features hapless robots C3-PO and R2-D2, stormtroopers, and the Millennium Falcon. It’s the perfect thing to liven up even the most boring Twitter feed!
