The movie Torrente, presidente, directed by Santiago Segura, has dazzled the Spanish audience since its premiere, grossing over 2.3 million euros on its first day. This figure makes the film the best opening of Spanish cinema in 15 years, even surpassing the new Pixar production, Hoppers, which premiered the previous weekend. Throughout the weekend, the gross has increased, reaching over 7 million euros, making it the fourth best opening in the history of Spanish cinema.
A Movie Destined to Succeed
Ten years after Torrente 5: Operation Eurovegas, Segura returns to this iconic character that has greatly influenced Spanish cinema. Fans of the saga have flocked to theaters, seduced solely by the announcement of its release and the promise of the political parody that characterizes the franchise. In this new installment, Segura presents a critique of the current political landscape in Spain, addressing issues such as the rise of the far-right, without taking a clear stance and directing his satire towards different political figures, including President Pedro Sánchez and the Podemos party.
The movie has been described as an anti-woke statement by some critics, who point out that the work feels more like an anti-everything commentary. Santiago Segura has managed to maintain the vulgar, filthy and crude essence that has defined the saga from the beginning, bringing his character into a very current context that resonates with the audience’s concerns.
With the momentum of its grand opening, Torrente, president has all the tickets to become one of the most viewed movies of the year in Spain, further consolidating the legacy of the franchise and Segura himself in the world of cinema.
