TSMC adds $100 billion more to US chip production: Arizona buildout reaches 12 facilities

TSMC said today it’ll put another $100 billion into its US expansion, bringing its Arizona buildout to 12 facilities and pushing its total US commitment to $265 billion. The headline number is huge, but the interesting part is what those plants are there to make. TSMC says its first Arizona fab entered 4nm production in late 2024, and the later plants are planned for 3nm and 2nm chips, the kind that feed the processors behind graphics cards, gaming PCs, phones, laptops, and cloud services.

It also lines up with Washington’s push to bring more chipmaking back to the US. Under the CHIPS and Science Act, TSMC can receive up to $6.6 billion in funding and $5 billion in loans, even though producing chips in the US still costs more than it does in Asia. At the same time, TSMC reported a 77% year-over-year jump in second-quarter 2026 profit.

If you keep an eye on the hardware you buy, this is one to watch. China is trying to push chip self-sufficiency from about 33% in 2024 to an 80% target by 2030. Supporters say more US capacity would reduce supply-chain risk. Critics argue it could weaken Taiwan’s “silicon shield.”
