Turkey has blocked Roblox: here is why

The Turkish government has decided to put an end to Roblox and block its access in the country. Roblox has been accused on multiple occasions of benefiting from the work done by children for its own benefit and promoting child exploitation. Something that, undoubtedly, has not gone unnoticed by the Turkish government.

‘According to our Constitution, our State is obliged to take the necessary measures to guarantee the protection of our children […] It is the duty of everyone to protect and support the best interests of our children, who are the guarantee of our future.’ This is explained by the Minister of Justice, Yilmaz Tunç, in a publication made in X.

According to the media Turkiye Today, the ban on Roblox was motivated by accusations of hosting sexual content on its platform. These allegations were also accompanied by those of virtual parties that supposedly promoted pedophilia.

Other complaints pointed out that ‘robux,’ Roblox’s virtual currency, was being used to encourage children’s participation in somewhat suspicious activities, such as gambling games.

Currently, it is unclear when this blockade will be implemented in the country. Roblox released a statement on their website explaining that they discovered on August 7th that the platform had been blocked in Turkey. ‘We are aware that millions of people use our platform in Turkey every day, including a thriving community of developers whose businesses rely on Roblox. We are constantly considering ways to ensure the safety of our community, and we share the commitment of global policymakers to protect children.’

On August 2nd, Turkish authorities also carried out another blockade in the region, that of Instagram. In addition, in February, access to Twitch and Kick was also restricted.
