The way stories are told on the big screen is constantly evolving at a fast pace. In a quest for realism, sometimes the voices of the characters can become muffled in certain scenes, especially when watching content in its original version. Other times, sound effects and background music can make it difficult to understand the dialogue. But not in tvOS 17, where a long-awaited feature has finally arrived.

Enhance any dialogue, albeit only through HomePods

tvOS 17, the latest version of Apple’s operating system for Apple TV, is set to tackle this issue that has been long-awaited by users. Surprisingly, there hasn’t been much buzz about it. With a simple adjustment on our television, the system will enhance the voices, ensuring clearer dialogue comprehension. This audio quality improvement will be available for Apple TV 4K users who have one or more HomePods as their audio output, making the viewing experience even better.

In the initial beta release of tvOS, this feature is currently only available on the second-generation HomePods. One possible explanation is that the original HomePod or the HomePod mini may not be able to handle the different channel outputs. Another possibility is that a subsequent beta version may bring this functionality to other models of Apple speakers as well.

Furthermore, in this initial beta, it appears to be limited to apps that utilize the system’s video player. Not all streaming apps may support it at this stage, but this could change as tvOS development progresses. If you have the necessary hardware and software, all you need to do is go to the sound settings during playback, navigate to the “Audio Enhancements” section, and enable “Dialogue Enhancement.”

This option complements the “Reduce Loud Sounds” feature and, according to Apple, analyzes the audio being played, separates the actors’ dialogue from the background effects and music, and directs the dialogue to the center channel. This small detail will undoubtedly be appreciated in multiple productions, including the second season of “Silo” and “Foundation.”
