Twitter announced today a new feature for the social network for creating custom timelines. The social network hopes to surface more relevant Tweets by allowing manual or automatic content curation by using a new API. Each custom timeline will receive its own unique URL for users to link to. There’s also the ability to embed entire timelines into a website using HTML.

Twitter gives a few examples about how custom timelines can be used for gathering content about an event or even TV show. Take a look below at the custom timeline from @TwitterMusic, which shows off popular songs.

!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0],p=/^http:/.test(d.location)?’http’:’https’;if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=p+”://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js”;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,”script”,”twitter-wjs”);

The API for custom timelines is launching in beta as Twitter is waiting to hear back from developers about what they want. To sign up to beta test the API, fill out this form.

The feature will be rolling out slowly to TweetDeck users over the “next several days.” Twitter has not mentioned if it would bring custom timelines to its mobile apps.
