Two months and a bit. That is how long it has taken Super Mario Galaxy to progress, very slowly, until it became one of the 63 films in cinema history to surpass 1 billion dollars.

Moreover, it achieved this ahead of Michael and is the first film of 2026 to do so. It doesn’t seem like its journey will go much further, so Illumination and Nintendo can be quite pleased.

Mario, number one!

The truth is that, although it has made 1 billion with a budget of only 110 million (multiplying by 9 and yielding substantial profits), this sequel has been a bit of a disappointment considering that Super Mario Bros managed to accumulate 1.36 billion. In other words: it has made it to the end, but without the mushroom that makes it great.

Nintendo’s next litmus test is clear: The Legend of Zelda, which on April 30 of next year will dominate all headlines for better or, as some suspect, for worse. After that we will have to wait until 2029 to see the new movie of the plumber, so all that’s left is to sit and wait: if the word-of-mouth isn’t good, it may just graze the crossbar of 1 billion.

Illumination has another chance this year to dazzle at the box office with the release of the third installment of the Minions. Although it seems that the franchise in question has already reached its peak, the whims of the audience are unpredictable these days. Mamma mia!
