The race to see who offers the best generative model based on artificial intelligence has already begun. In fact, it has been active for several years, thanks to (or because of) OpenAI and the popular ChatGPT. Thus, the fever for artificial intelligence has led the big technology companies to develop their own proposals, such as Google with Gemini.
Gemini comes to replace Google Bard, a conversational generative model based on PaLM 2 and presented in 2023. Under this new name, Google wants to give a facelift to the model, which competes head-to-head against ChatGPT.
Gemini has many capabilities: it understands both text and images, videos and audios. In addition, it is not limited to being used only on PC and works on any type of device (including mobile).
One of the great differences that Gemini has compared to other generative models is its training. Google has built Gemini as a multimodal model from its conception, which means that it can understand both text and images in real time.
Gemini Versions and How to Use It
As of today, Gemini has three versions, called Nano, Pro, and Ultra.
- Gemini Nano: is the “reduced” version of Gemini. It is intended to work on mobile devices.
- Gemini Pro: this is one of the paid versions of Gemini. It offers a series of advantages over the free model, such as improved responsiveness, code generation, and language translation.
- Gemini Ultra: the most advanced paid version of Gemini. It accesses real-time information through Google, is optimized to generate more realistic conversations, and also writes in more creative formats.
If we compare it to ChatGPT, Gemini Ultra would be the equivalent of GPT-4 and Gemini Pro of GPT-3.5. However, Gemini Nano is one of the most interesting proposals, since it works natively on mobile devices, there would be no need for an active internet connection.
The different versions of Gemini will become publicly available in the coming months. For now, you can already start “talking” to Gemini through this link. Remember that to use it, you must have an active Google account.
