The history behind the creation and introduction of the original iPhone is full of secrets and curiosities, many of which we will probably never know. However, there are a couple of stories that we do know, such as the first call ever made with an iPhone and made by Steve Jobs.
In presentations, everything is prepared in detail and even more so if we are talking about Apple. What is said, the prototypes that are shown, the videos, who goes out… everything is part of a complex and millimetric script to sell us the idea of what is shown. Even so, during the presentation of the original iPhone, the call Steve Jobs made live was not “prepared” as usual.
The iPhone emerged as the combination of three concepts: a phone, a browser and an iPod. At the time, the iPod was the crown jewel within Apple and one of the company’s most profitable products. The popularity of the iPod and the innovation of the iPhone made Steve Jobs, above all, fully confident in the product he was presenting. In fact, he dared to call a Starbucks in front of the thousands present.
According to Marketing Mind, one of the employees answered him and Jobs could not think of anything else but to ask for 4,000 lattes. He then clarified to the employee that it was a joke and that he had “got the wrong number”. Yin Hang “Hannah” Zhang, the barista who answered Jobs on the phone at the time, learned about the situation many years later through the press.
After the event, Hannah stated in an interview that she felt “very happy” and that she was “very lucky to have had the opportunity to talk to him.” Anecdotes aside, surely few knew at the time what a revolution that little touch phone was going to be.
