WhatsApp for iPhone will move the a year subscription model, the same model that’s currently used for its Android app. We reported back in March that WhatsApp was considering changing the business model for its iOS app and now it’s finally been implemented. The annual subscription will cost only $0.99 per year but new users will get the first year free.

Previously, WhatsApp for iPhone cost $0.99 to own the app out-right. The company is changing to this business model in order to avoid creating an app with ads, which lowers the user experience.

If you purchased WhatsApp for iPhone for $0.99, you will not be charged any annual subscription, ever. Those grandfathered in can continue to use WhatsApp “free of charge for the rest of your life.”

The change in business model also brought along updates to the app. Users can now back up their chat histories using iCloud. Users can also upload photos in bulk with the new update. The company has also released an API that makes it easier to integrate WhatsApp into other apps.
