Microsoft has announced that Windows 7 will no longer be available for new laptops from October 30th 2014, meaning the operating system will be impossible to buy at retail from then. Microsoft stopped selling Windows 7 on October 30th this year, but will provide support until January 14th 2020.
This means that Windows 7 users can relax – there are still years of support for the operating system. But if you were thinking of upgrading to Windows 7, that opportunity has now passed. Owners of Windows 8.1 pro are allowed to downgrade to Windows 7 – you can find out more on Microsoft’s downgrade FAQ.
Windows 8 has not proved as popular as Microsoft hoped. Even in October this year, Windows 8 market share was increasing slower than Windows 7. While Windows 7 has had a big effect on XP use, it seems that users are not as keen on upgrading to Windows 8.
