Windows-8-logo-mediumThere was speculation last week that the upcoming version of Windows would be called Windows Blue. Now more information has emerged that shows the next version of Windows will simply be called Windows 8.1. The update for Windows RT will be called Windows RT 8.1. This makes sense as it follows the naming convention of Windows Phone, which has seen versions 7, 7.5, 7.8, and 8.

ZDNet’s Mary Jo Foley spoke with an anonymous Microsoft source that told her the official name will be Windows 8.1. This update will most likely be a very incremental update, improving touch features and the interface. While minor updates, it shows that Microsoft is moving to a much quicker update cycle to bring improvements to its desktop/tablet operating system.

More evidence popped up this morning when Roman L. (@AngelWZR) tweeted out a screenshot of an experimental build of Windows Blue with “Windows 8.1 Pro” displayed prominently as the version number in the system info window.

Details are still sparse and Microsoft has not commented officially about the name for the next version of Windows. What we do know is that the next version of Windows will most likely still be included under the “Windows 8” brand.
