Wizards of the Coast will not publish their collaboration of Magic: The Gathering with Monster Hunter for the moment

Wizards of the Coast has announced a significant change in its release plans for the new limited card line, Secret Lair x Monster Hunter, initially scheduled for December 1 of this year. The company has decided to postpone the sale until 2026 as a result of the negative reaction from fans following the initial announcement of this collaboration with Capcom.

They want to bring out the best possible version of it

In a recent post on the official Magic: The Gathering blog, WotC admitted that the initial proposal did not meet fan expectations, acknowledging that there were mistakes that needed rectification. Among the main criticisms was the notable absence of Equipment cards, a crucial element in the Monster Hunter universe, as well as a typographical error on the “Kokoto” card. “We have heard and understood that you were disappointed, and we believe we can do better,” they stated in the announcement, announcing a complete ‘rework’ of the collection.

The original release was planned to include a total of 19 cards distributed across four separate collections: The Hunt, The Hunters, The Monster I, and The Monster II. However, the criticism regarding the lack of cards related to Equipment and other significant errors led WotC to reevaluate its approach to this collaboration.

2025 has been an active year for the Secret Lair programs from Wizards of the Coast, featuring collaborations with different intellectual properties. Recently, releases have been made in partnership with well-known brands such as PlayStation, Jaws, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and The Office, generating excitement among the gaming community. With the current buzz surrounding Secret Lair x Monster Hunter, it remains to be seen how this will affect future collaborations and the overall perception of WotC’s releases.
