Xbox Project Helix emerges as a “family of devices”: not just one console

At Gamescom 2026, Microsoft laid out Xbox Project Helix as its next hardware plan and described it as a “family of devices,” not a single next-generation Xbox.

That opens the door to a few possibilities: a high-end flagship, a lower-cost base model, a handheld, and maybe even a cloud streaming device. For buyers, that would mean more price points. For Microsoft, it’s a way to chip away at Sony’s lead with the PlayStation 5.

Helix lines up with Microsoft’s Xbox Play Anywhere push too. support for native Xbox console games, native PC games, and backward compatibility across every Xbox generation. If that holds, Project Helix would give players more room to move than a typical closed console setup.

If you bounce between Xbox and PC, this is one to keep an eye on, especially now. Microsoft seems focused on keeping prices in check, even as analysts warn that premium systems could climb past $1,000. It also looks like the company is moving harder toward digital-first hardware after rolling out its disc-to-digital program for people who already own physical games.

For now, though, Microsoft has only talked about Project Helix. There are still no devices, no prices, and no release dates.
