Fast-paced naval shooter

Considering the popularity of war games like Medal of Honour or Delta Force, it seems strange that you never see many naval equivalents. While this weirdly-named blaster is a world away from the blockbuster army games in terms of graphics, it has a strange appeal that keeps you coming back for more.

The action is fast and furious as you attempt to navigate your micro machine-style vessel through a series of varying missions. Some of the early levels, where you collect cones or run over sharks, can be a little mundane,. However, once you get tooled up with guns, it's a different story, as you blast your way through frenzied battles in your quest for nautical glory. The animation of the boat sprite is impressive, although it takes a while to keep afloat without crashing into other boats or missiles. The splashing sound effects are also well executed, even if they become a little repetitive after a while.

As long as you're not expecting impressive 3D graphics or awe-inspiring cut-scenes then Battle Boattle will keep you amused for a while. However, in terms of its longevity, the game offers only as much to keep you amused for a wet afternoon at best.

Battle Boattle is an extremely fast and highly dynamic game, supporting two player action. There are seventy missions oozing with action (make sure you don't run out of adrenaline halfway). It's a complete sensory overload, so the developer packed them in six different episodes to go easy on your heart.

There are seven vessel types (Patrol Boat, Cruiser, Turret, Twister, Barge, Sonic, Scout), each with a unique set of characteristics. All boat movements have been designed by marine physics scientists and are as realistic as mathematical models allow them to be. There are eight bonus types that can save your and your vessel's life, when you get into hot waters with opponents getting ready to feed you to sharks. Plus, you can enjoy three game modes.

PROS

  • Smooth boat animations
  • Plenty of fast-paced action
  • Lots of levels to choose from

CONS

  • Levels become a little repetitive after a while
  • Drab graphics
