A revamped version of a well-loved ’90s game

Marathon—Bungie's legendary first-person shooter video game—has earned its stripes as a time-tested masterpiece that takes gamers into an immersive dimension. This premium action-adventure title is gearing up for a well-deserved comeback—more than 20 years after its debut.

At its core, Marathon is a sci-fi game where players assume the role of a security officer aboard the colony ship Marathon. The game's premise has similarities to other ‘90s classics, such as Rise Of The Triad: Dark War and Halo: Combat Evolved. With intricate mechanics that interweave with a well-written narrative, this new iteration is shaping up to be an epic joyride.

Quick plot round up

In Marathon, players are tasked with safeguarding the ship from vicious extraterrestrial invasions while simultaneously probing into a cryptic AI entity's takeover of the vessel's systems. Within the game's terminals, players can access an intricate universe where various factions compete for supremacy. As the game's plot unfolds in layers, players must actively piece together the story as they progress through the game.

In terms of gameplay, the game features a health system dependent upon the player's avatar's armor, which can be depleted in combat situations. Restoring armor is achieved by collecting shields scattered throughout the levels, making sure not to deplete the player's health. The game also includes a unique oxygen system that limits the player's ability to move through the environment, and players must think strategically to conserve their oxygen supply.

The highly anticipated revival of the game will veer away from the single-player mode and instead put players in the driver's seat of intense PvP combat scenarios. Additionally, unlike its original version, the revamped game will be compatible with a broader range of platforms, including PC, PS5, and the XBOX X/S series. However, take note that this isn’t a direct sequel to the originals though it’s set in the same universe.

Reinforcing its name

To sum up, Marathon has created a legacy that has lasted decades and is set to continue its reign with the upcoming iteration. Fans of the series have wanted more for years, and they will finally get it with the latest version. Despite the many years that have passed, this sci-fi shooter still has plenty to offer to game enthusiasts of this genre.
