DID YOU KNOW?
The technology for caller IDs was invented by Theodore George Paraskevakos, a Greek communications engineer, in 1968. It consisted of transmitting the caller’s number in the form of electronic data over telephone lines and into the receiver’s device. It wasn’t until 1971 when Paraskevakos constructed the first caller ID devices – a transmitter and a receiver that was used in Huntsville, Alabama for the Boeing company. However, it was Kazuo Hashimoto who invented the first device that displayed caller ID information. Hashimoto is also credited as the inventor of the answering machine.
Caller IDs have gone a long way for users to avoid answering nuisance calls. Nuisance calls run the whole gamut from unwanted calls, prank calls, silent calls, and sales calls. The ability to screen calls by checking the caller ID before deciding to answer the call is called “selective call rejection.” However, callers still have a lot of means to harass people over the telephone. The can turn off the caller ID or spoof it, they can use payphones and burner phones, and they can make calls untraceable. This is why call blocker programs have become more effective in preventing unwanted phone calls. With call blockers, a blocked caller’s call won’t come through at all -- it won’t cause the phone to ring.
