WHAT'S THE MEANING?

Co-operative gameplay is a form of gaming where two or more people team up to complete a game's objectives. Shortened to co-op gameplay, it is different from multiplayer since it involves contending against other players.

DID YOU KNOW?

Co-operative gameplay in video games started as early as 1978 when then-leading game developer Atari Inc. released Fire Truck. Fire Truck is a coin-operated arcade game which required two players to complete the game. The earliest console games that offered co-op modes were Beat 'Em Up games like Streets of Rage and River City Ransom. The co-op mode became famous in the 1980s with titles like Contra, Metal Slug, and Gunstar Heroes. These games became bestsellers along with Quartet and Gauntlet, which catered to at least 4 players. PCEngine then released Dungeon Explorer which allowed up to five players. Sports games that offer co-op modes also became famous. Among those are Madden NFL and NHL Hockey, both released by Electronic Arts. Today, many of the best selling co-op horror games on Steam are free. Although the popular ones still require payment like Left 4 Dead 2, Resident Evil 5, and DayZ. Popularized by the rise of zombie movies like World War Z and I Am Legend, as well as television series of the same genre as The Walking Dead.
