DID YOU KNOW?

Did you know that the first video game controller consisted of only two controls? In 1958, American physicist William Higinbotham invented the video game Tennis for Two, which was played on an oscilloscope with two aluminum controllers, each of which had a dial for positioning the player's plane and a button for hitting the virtual tennis ball. But along with the development of video games, the controllers enjoyed evolution as well. Arcade games, which paved the way for the current stream of video games, have gamepads that have a directional stick (or joystick) and multiple buttons for different actions. The early generations of home consoles had smaller versions of the gamepad until button-based directional controls were introduced in the third generation.

Controllers also evolved based on need, with shooting games requiring gun-like controllers, and racing games needing wheel-shaped controllers that also has pedals. Computer peripherals like mouse and keyboard also became controllers for video games, especially for games played on personal computers. Valve, one of the biggest players in the gaming market, decided to combine the best features of the mouse-and-keyboard controller and the traditional gamepad and launched the Steam Controller in 2015. The Steam Controller has two mouse-like trackpads, a joystick, and fourteen buttons, including controls under the grip.
