There are older examples like Mary Shelley's Frankenstein or Bram Stoker's Dracula, but among the more recent examples is Stephen King's The Shining. Most people are more familiar with the film version, but the book is even better and much, much scarier!"

"Vintage King. Character development is so complete it gives this reader the feeling he is part of the story. A helpless voyeur, unable to do anything else but observe (almost like the character in "Autopsy: Room Four" from his collection, "Nightmares & Dreamscapes). Carrie's story is not only engaging, it is compelling and powerful. A young woman, possessed with unimaginable power in one of the most vulnerable times of a woman's life, struggles with the things in her life that makes her different. Her fragile ego is constantly being stressed by the ridicule she must endure and all the hateful things done to her. The story could not have ended better, though, of course, bittersweet on an incredibly horrible scale. (Incidentally, the movie with Sissy Spaceck and John Travolta is really quite good, and does not harm, whatsoever, to the book.) Of course I'd recommend buying this if you are looking for best horror and thriller books."

"This book was so very interesting the way it switched from the book, to the newspaper, and to the book written by one of the characters. Stephen King's depiction of telekinesis was brilliant. Another thing that he nailed at was the character development. I took a liking for people such as Sue Snell and Miss Desjardin, while I loathed people such as Chris and Billy. Carrie White was a bold but fragile character who I was able to relate to, while her mother was an evil, abusive fanatic. King made us understand the disgusting thoughts we think about people who bully us and what we wish would happen to them. The psychological aspect beats the horror aspect by a long shot. It was a great, original thriller. I RECOMMEND THIS DEFINITELY!"

"Recommending the classic Carrie as a horror book seems like too safe an option to me, personally. While it is famous for being American Author Stephen King's first published work, it is not as terrifying as many of his later stories. Therefore, I feel as if this solution is just mentioning one of King's best known books, not selecting one of the best horror books of all time. King has scarier work, and authors other than King have scarier novels as well. While there's nothing wrong with Carrie, I don't think it should be mentioned among the best horror books of all time. Instead, it was only written by one of the best horror novelists of all time. I do not believe this solution, therefore, is effective."

"I found "Carrie" to be a compelling piece of fiction that captures the essence and struggles of youth and adolescence in a way that is both believable and cringingly relatable. Author Stephen King creates an air of validity by using detailed (but fictional) newspapers, court transcripts, and personal memoirs to make the story seem real, in addition to the complex character development that one can sympathize with. While reading this, I truly felt for Carrie, and often imagined myself at that age again in some of her situations. Her actions and the drama that follows is certainly understood and even more enjoyable to experience when you feel as if you are going through the motions with her! "

"If you are looking for a thriller than Carrie is the book for you, because even when I think about the story still, I still get nightmares and I cannot go back to sleep! Carrie is by far one of the most timeless and classic stories about how bullying can make people go insane and do terrible things to one another. This is a story that profoundly shocked me and continues to shape my idea of how fiction should be written. Stephen King is a genius who has the story telling skills to match. He introduces his readers to an immersive and frightening world where supernatural powers are possible and where revenge is almost a given. If you are searching for a thriller than Carrie is a must read!"

"This book really hits home for a lot of people. There are a lot of us that have been teased for being different and have had to endure the embarrassment that comes with it. This book is for those that like to see revenge come to those that have pushed the wrong person too far. The suspense of this movie will have you on the edge of your seat till the very end. A classic Stephen King base movie where all things build slowly increasing your anticipation until you finally get the climax you had been waiting for at the end. Not a movie for the little ones, but adults will find a great deal of satisfaction and suspense in this movie. "

"A modern classic of the supernatural, this slim, straight-ahead thriller has served as a template for countless inferior imitations. It's still the real deal, though: sharply observed, solidly constructed, and suspenseful despite the narrative's sense of inevitability. Author Stephen King employs (fictional) newspaper reports, court transcripts, and personal memoirs to lend a sense of realism to the outlandish proceedings, and that strategy, in addition to the author's ability to create credible, sympathetic characters, works splendidly. "I'm a huge Stephen King fan and have had the privilege of reading a number of this books, Carrie included. I have also seen the movie, Carrie, and both are stories very well told. I don't think anyone will ever forget the infamous pig's blood scene where Carrie ultimately changes her demeanor and starts wreaking havoc on her high school cohorts. I loved this book because I couldn't put it down, I just had to know what was going to happen. It is now a classic horror book/movie in my opinion along with several other of Stephen King's writings."

"Stephen King is the master of horror and for good reason. Carrie is a classic King horror novel, a psychological thriller with a rightfully-notorious ending. A must-read for any fan of horror or thriller fiction, if you're a fan like I am this one will definitely earn a place on the bookshelf - right alongside King's other classics! Like all Stephen King works, there are unusual and controversial themes that some may disapprove of, and King's love of the esoteric is on display here - some people dislike that, and many more love it."
    Donna Delgado

""Carrie" is a good horror novel, but NOT the best. It's rather short, and one of King's earliest works. I would certainly recommend King; he is one of the finest horror novelists to ever put pen to paper. But one should think about his other terrifying novels: "IT", "The Stand", "The Shining"...the list goes on. I would recommend "The Stand". It will keep you reading and leave you terrified. The novel follows several characters, and the horrors each must face after humanity is decimated due to a government-engineered superflu. "

Reading tie-in books based on TV or movies is always hit-or-miss, depending on the author's understanding and interpretation of the characters and settings; however, in this case, reading the story was just like watching an extended episode of the show.
