    DID YOU KNOW

Did you know that the roguelike freeware game UnReal World is considered as one of the forefathers of the survival games? With the old and pixelated ASCII graphics, it looks very far from today's survival games like Left 4 Dead 2 and Unkilled: Multiplayer Zombie Survival, but its gameplay and storyline are as thrilling and as challenging as the modern survival game. It was set in Iron Age Finland, and players must choose between pre-historic occupations like being a fisherman, a trapper, or a tradesman, and gather necessary elements to survive, for as long as they like to play. Game co-creator Sami Maaranen has not stopped developing the game since its release in 1992, and the game has transitioned from DOS to Windows, and now as a game in Steam. It is still running after two-and-a-half decades because the maps are randomly generated for endless replayability, rich diversity in AI NPC, and a plethora of customizable weapons and traps. Today, survival games have evolved, from its graphics to gameplay, which now includes multiplayer modes. These games might not last as long as the still-running UnReal World, but these games raked in $398million in revenues in just the first six months of 2017. That number is just a drop in the bucket compared to the billions made by other genres, but it did encourage game makers to keep trying, as three key titles were released after that, including Conan Exiles, Ark: Survival Evolved, and SCUM.
