DID YOU KNOW?

Did you know that Need for Speed was compatible with one of the most expensive consoles ever made? In 1993, EA founder Trip Hawkins conceived the first video console with a CD-ROM system. They called it the 3DO Interactive Multiplayer. Unlike other consoles, it used a series of specifications and no software royalties. These factors, among others, hiked up the console's price. One 3DO console was worth seven hundred dollars. If it came out in 2019, it would be sold for at least one thousand one hundred sixty-five dollars. For comparison, one of 2019’s best gaming consoles is worth three hundred and ninety-nine dollars. In spite of the high price point, it was one of the most popular games in the 90s. Primarily because of its 3D graphics. In 1994, it was unheard of to have a 3D environment and polygonal race cars running at 15 frames per second.

In 1995, Need for Speed PC was released to keep up with the popularity of PC games. The PC version had a refined interface and new content compared to the 3DO version. The biggest change was racing side-by-side with other cars and a tournament mode. Former 3DO players even noticed their cars driving faster. Today, the 3DO is long gone but Need for Speed continues to live on. It has released over twenty titles and sold over 100 million units. Most of which are compatible with Xbox, PlayStation, and PC. The twenty-third NFS, Need for Speed Payback, has ultra-realistic graphics, 4k resolution and 30 to 60 fps rate. Indeed, the Need for Speed franchise has no limits.
