DID YOU KNOW?

Did you know that the Philippines is considered to be a nation of polyglots? Polyglot is defined as one who knows and is able to speak and write in several languages. And by that, we just don't refer to Filipino and other 130 local languages in the Philippines like Tagalog or Visayan. Yes! You read that right, this South-East Asian country has 130 languages. And for the record, Filipino and Tagalog are very much two different languages.

Anyway, it is not surprising though to know that the Philippines is one of Asia's top English-speaking countries since American English is the second widely-used language in the field of academe. Yet, it is also worthy to mention that the Philippines was a former colony of Spain for more than 300 years, making a significant impact in their local language. Interestingly, a report says Filipino polyglots are not anymore coming from the academe, but rather those who living and working abroad. In an article written by Patricio N. Abinales for Rappler, a news website, he mentioned that nowadays, a surprising variety of languages spoken by Filipinos and foreigners are heard at the airport. Thanks to the increasing number of OFWs (Overseas Filipino Workers) abroad. One can recall the ubiquity of must-have printed Filipino dictionaries for learning English. Well, this was before the birth of Tagalog to English translation apps. You know what, no matter what your Mother language is, speak loud and proud!
