DID YOU KNOW?

While there are a lot of subgenres of RPGs, the two main categories that split the genre is “RPG” and “JRPG”, the latter of which means “Japanese Role-Playing Game”. But what makes JRPGs different from a western RPG? It all boils down to why the players play the game and what they get out of it. JRPGs are often built around a narrative, rich with story and drama and often has its own set of established characters. Players will control the characters and come along for the narrative ride rather than inserting themselves into the story, so it’s more about empathy. Consider some of the games on this list: Valkyria Chronicles 4 and Kingdom Hearts III. Both games are JRPGs and not because of the studios they’re from nor because they have an anime-esque art style. It’s because they already have a colorful cast of characters, each with their own personalities and mindsets. There are rarely any dialogue choices, and if there are, they are usually already aligned with a character’s personality rather than the player’s. If you think about it, Shadow of the Tomb Raider and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt could arguably be JRPGs by that standard, even if they come from studios outside Japan.

But the narrative is not something that’s always wanted when someone picks up a game. If you’re looking for something that allows you to express yourself more, that’s where western RPGs shine. Games like Dark Souls III, Fallout 4, and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim let the player experience the fantasy of being a hero, of imagining themselves in the very game they play. Regardless, this list of Xbox One RPG games has choices of both flavors. The only question is what kind of role would YOU like to play?
