DID YOU KNOW?

Did you know that the first skyscraper built in New York City was the Tower Building in 1889? It was 11 stories high and was considered a skyscraper because it was the first building in NYC to have a steel skeleton structure. It was demolished in 1913 though. However, the next iconic skyscraper made was built in 1901 and is still standing there today and you may recognize it with its distinctive triangular shape. The Flatiron Building, originally known as the Fuller Building, was built by Chicago architect Daniel Burnham. The triangular 22-story steel-framed skyscraper is located at 175 Fifth Avenue in the borough of Manhattan. The then-daring shape of the building actually made a lot of people upset, they called it “awkward” and a “monstrosity”, but the public opinion is much different today. In fact, the skyscraper is now one of the most visited skyscrapers to this date because of its unique aesthetic feel to it. City buildings are important for urbanization as people need to adapt to changes every day, same goes for the fast-moving development of technology. And today, companies have now developed city-building games made available for our PCs and even smartphones. Best examples of these are Cities: Skylines, Tropico 5, Banished, Age of Empires, and more.
