WHAT’S THE MEANING?

According to Techopedia, a Caller ID (also known as Calling Line Identification) is a telephone feature available in analog and digital telephone systems that displays the caller’s phone number on the recipient’s phone device when there is an incoming call. In some cases, alongside the phone number is the location of the caller. It has two types: 1.) The Single Data Message Format (SDMF) that only displays the caller’s telephone number, the date, and the time of the call and 2.) The Multiple Data Message Format (MDMF) which also displays the name aside from the number.

DID YOU KNOW

If you are experiencing an increase in the number of local calls to your home and cellphone, you might be among the prospects of the phenomenon called “neighbor spoofing”. Indeed, inasmuch as technology has helped us in so many ways, it still has some major drawbacks.

One timely example is the “neighbor spoofing” in which phone scammers spoof area codes and then combine it with the area code and the first three digits of your phone number. According to Jim Temmer, this is their way of finding a live person they can use to further scam others. He added that in the event that you receive a call and the caller is displayed as your name, never ever answer it for you might be put in danger. On a related note, an article posted on Chicago Tribune in May 1990 about the privacy invasion of caller ID may still seem to be relevant to the recent article on Better Business Bureau on May 12, 2018.
