WHAT’S THE MEANING

Green screen is the process of using a single color as a backdrop in the film production to ease the video editor in adding backgrounds, characters, and other images in the post-production process of filmmaking. A relevant concept to understand is keying. Keying is the isolation of a single color or brightness value for the purpose of allowing another image to become more visible in some affected areas (of the green screen).

But why the color green? Honestly, you can key in any color that you want such as red, yellow, purple, or pink, but the biggest factor that affects the choice of color is contrast. To isolate one area from the rest, the background color has to stand out. Although the use of color blue is widely practiced in Hollywood, it is undeniable that bright green beats blue because it is not a common color worn by actors. Interestingly, even in studio photography, the use of green screen is essential. Jennifer Berube wrote an article on Sleeklens in 2011 as to why the green screen is heaven-sent. Looking for shooting location can be time-consuming and costly that is why photographers utilize the green screen, for it allows them to place their subjects in any controlled environment they want and layer any background of their choice using photo-editing software. However, improper usage and poor techniques could lead to fake-looking photos so take the time and have the patience to train. Lastly, according to experts, the green screen gives you the light consistency because using one automatically blocks out the ambient light, thus saving you from the all-day adjusting of light and colors.
