WHAT’S THE MEANING?

As the name suggests, turn-based strategy games (TBS) are games where the passage of time in the game is marked by the players’ turns. In TBS games, the players take turns while playing. This concept is taken from the board game tradition of turn-taking. The other model of time-keeping in games is called real-time strategy, where players play simultaneously and the game progresses continuously.

DID YOU KNOW?

Turn-based strategy games are favored by some players because it gives them more time to think and decide. What follows after they take their turn is a period of free time that they can use to analyze the game and strategize for their next turns. Unlike real-time strategy games, where the player is under time pressure to make his moves, turn-based strategy offers the players a moment of respite. Chess is a prime example of this, as it is a predecessor to the turn-based games of today. It allegedly took Viktor Korchnoi, a chess grandmaster, an hour to make a single move because he analyzed every possible result. This is favorable to his opponent, as he also gets an hour to ponder and plan. Playing these kinds of games, games that force you to think, analyze, and strategize, are scientifically proven to improve a person’s cognitive flexibility.
