All the Money in the World is based on the 1995 book Painfully Rich: The Outrageous Fortunes and Misfortunes of the Heirs of J. Paul Getty. It chronicles the events surround the kidnapping of 16-year-old John Paul Getty III by an organized crime syndicate in Rome, Italy in 1973. He was the grandson of J. Paul Getty, played by Christopher Plummer, who at the time was the richest man in the world. The kidnappers demand a ransom of $17 million dollars for the return of the young man. His mother, played by Michelle Williams, didn't have the money and asked J. Paul Getty to help pay for her son's release. He rather infamously refuses to help, claiming that it will only serve to embolden future attempts by criminals to repeat the kidnapping. Instead, Getty enlists Fletcher Chace, played by Mark Wahlberg, to investigate the kidnapping and secure his grandson's release. The movie follows this real-life story as it plays out to its ultimate conclusion.

Kevin Spacey was originally cast and portrayed the role of J. Paul Getty in the film. After multiple allegations of sexual abuse, sexual assault, and pedophilia against Kevin Spacey, the role was recast and given to Christopher Plummer. All the scenes in which Kevin Spacey appeared had to be filmed again, with Plummer playing the role. This was completed barely a month before the film was set to be released.
