Set during the prohibition era, Joe Coughlin, played by Ben Affleck, is the son of a Boston police captain. He falls in love with Emma Gould, the daughter of a rather prominent gangster named Albert White. His father isn’t a fan of the courtship and warns him that a life of crime will catch up to him eventually. A rival gangster named Maso Pescatore discovers the affair and tries to blackmail Joe by ordering him to kill Albert White. Joe instead flees to California, robbing a bank along the way where multiple policemen are killed. Joe is lured into a trap by Emma and White, and he’s beaten and arrested for the murders. Joe’s father pulls some strings and gets him out on a lesser charge. Joe moves to Florida to work security for Pescatore and his liquor company, which is under attack by White.
