The film focuses on the real events of World War II, specifically the actions of Winston Churchill, played by Gary Oldman, stepping in as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom following the resignation of Neville Chamberlain. In 1940, amidst the height of the conflict in Europe against the Nazi forces led by Adolf Hitler, it falls on Churchill to decide the best course of action for his country and ultimately the world. Receiving pressure to attempt negotiations with Hitler, Churchill must weigh the possible outcomes and decide how to approach the situation, with either diplomacy or continued military force, knowing full well that a wrong decision could lead to his country's downfall and his own humiliation in this newfound position of great authority and responsibility. All of Great Britain, its people, leaders, and royalty, depend on Churchill to see them through to victory in this, deemed humanity's darkest hour.
