TeraBox

TeraBox is a Japanese cloud storage service that has risen to popularity largely because of its generous free storage space offer of 1 terabyte (1024 gigabytes), which is significantly more free storage than what most competitors offer. Dropbox, for instance, offers just 2 gigabytes of cloud storage to free users.

What is TeraBox used for? TeraBox is used mostly for file storage, especially for storing files and videos online. It supports accessible, cross-platform access via web browsers and the TeraBox app, and features such as real-time file synchronization, file sharing with secure links or automatic photo backups.

How does TeraBox work? You get access to 1 terabyte of TeraBox cloud storage space immediately after signing up for the service. You can access your files via the TeraBox mobile app, desktop applications, or via any modern web browser.

Files can be uploaded from within the interface. TeraBox supports drag & drop uploading of supported file types. You may furthermore enable the auto-backup of photos and video files so that these are synced to the cloud storage automatically.

Free accounts are limited in several ways. The maximum file size is 4 gigabytes and there is a 500-file limit. Uploads and downloads are throttled furthermore, and you can restore deleted files only within the first ten days of hitting the delete button. Upgrade to one of the paid plans to increase the limits significantly and remove the throttling.

Both paid plans are significantly cheaper than the two Dropbox plans for businesses. Dropbox Standard, for instance, comes at $15 per month and user, and it has a three-user minimum. While you do get 5 TB of shared storage for the team, a single seat costs about five times as much as a TeraBox paid plan.

The web interface of TeraBox is user friendly and easy to use. It supports drag and drop operations for file uploads and moving files. File uploads and downloads were relatively speedy during my tests, but you should not expect gigabit-speed out of the service. Transfer speeds were about 80 Mbps on average during tests, but mileage may vary depending on routing and location. As a tip, I suggest you use the free trial to test the download and upload speed from your business locations.

TeraBox Premium Plus subscribers gain access to extra features. These can be divided into the groups AI and file processing. All file processing features are integrated in the TeraBox application only.  There, subscribers gain access to a range of file processing options, including conversions to Excel or PowerPoint, PDF encryption, signatures, or lite PDF editing.

As for AI features, they are scattered all over the place. AI subtitles and translation features are available in the app, whereas the Essay Writer, Assistant, Smart Paraphrase, and Presentation Maker tools only in the web-version and the PC program.

Is TeraBox Safe to use? TeraBox is generally safe to use. The service uses encryption for data transfers, supports access controls and security features such as two-factor authentication. It does lack advanced security options, such as zero-knowledge encryption or support for security keys.

There have not been any reported breaches, which is good. However, the service’s past is a bit muddy. It was previously known as Dubox and operated out of China using Chinese data centers. It is unclear if these are still in use or of the now-Japanese-owned company has moved data centers to other locations.

It is advised to either use encryption before storing sensitive files or information using the service or avoid doing so altogether.

What is Dropbox Business used for? Dropbox offers cloud storage to subscribers. You may install the Dropbox app on local devices to push files to the cloud automatically or sync them between devices. Dropbox is not a backup solution like iDrive, as it does not support full system backups, but a file synchronization and collaboration service. When comparing cloud storage options, Dropbox stands alongside other popular services like Google Drive, which is known for its free storage capacity and seamless integration with Google's ecosystem.

Essentially, it ensures that users and all team members have access to all files regardless of their location. The Dropbox app and web access guarantee access to the files.

One of Dropbox’s main features is collaboration. Dropbox offers three plans to business users. One of them, Dropbox Professional, is limited to a single user, however. It is ideal for freelancers, but most businesses require seats for multiple users.

That is where the Dropbox Business plans Dropbox Standard and Dropbox Advanced come into play. Dropbox Standard costs $15 per user and month. It gives the team 5 TB of storage space, admin controls, team folders, and options to manage team sharing and create groups and roles. Dropbox is considered a bit expensive compared to some alternatives, which leads many users to look for more affordable or free options like TeraBox.

Dropbox Advanced, for $24 per user and month, gives the team 15 TB of storage space by default. It includes all features of Standard and enables extra features including advanced key management, end-to-end encryption, tiered admin management, compliance tracking, and support for SSO (single sign-on). Both tiers have a three-user minimum.
