BitComet allows you to exchange files with other users although it must only be used for those files which can be legally exchanged online. The interface is similar to that of eMule with features running down the left hand pane, control buttons across the top and the torrents that are downloading in the main window in the center. Once files have started downloading, the regular stop, pause, cancel, update etc options are all available on BitComet plus a handy "remove torrent & all files" option which removes all trace of an unwanted torrent from your PC.

Download speeds are OK although not as good as similar P2P apps such as uTorrent. One of the reasons for this is that BitComet doesn't have as many users as it once had as more effective and user friendly alternatives entered the market. One of the more handy features of BitComet however is a ‘preview media’ option, which forces the torrent to download sequentially instead of randomly thus allowing you to preview any multimedia downloads. It’s a great way to avoid broken links, but, on the downside, it will slow down your download considerably.

Most recently, BitComet are experimenting with a feature that enables you to download some or all of the data in torrents from non-bittorrent sources, or even from peers of other torrents with all, or some of the same content. Note that this release is also the first bittorrent client to issue a stable 64bit version

Another interesting feature on BitComet is the ‘intelligent disk cache’ which really comes into its own on high speed connections. If you are lucky enough to get download transfer rates of 500 kb/s or higher, activating it allows BitComet to cache the data to access the disk less frequently. The result of this is that it doesn’t slow down your PC as receiving large amounts of data can sometimes do.

One downside of BitComet is that you are pestered with ads from time to time within the main interface. The other downside is that the uninstall procedure is not particularly clean. The application directory remains as does the registry entry although you can remove the former manually and the latter with any good registry cleaner such as Revo.

There are simpler and more popular clients out there, such as uTorrent uTorrent and Azureus that offer better download rates with less fuss. However, if you have a particularly fast connection, can’t wait for your files to download before watching them and enjoy a torrent client with lots of whistles and bells, BitComet might be for you.

Although The PC Decrapifier is designed for new computers, there's no reason not to use it on an older one. It's easy to let hard drives get filled up with unwanted installations, but Windows makes uninstallation a bit of a pain. Instead of uninstalling one by one, The PC Decrapifier tries to automate things, y letting you select multiple applications to uninstall at once.

The PC Decrapifier doesn't need installation. When you open it, you are taken through a step-by-step process, after which the the app closes. The PC Decrapifier first asks you what startup processes you'd like to kill, so your PC opens more quickly, and then you can choose to uninstall any other program on your PC. While it lacks some of the advanced features of Revo Uninstaller, it's quicker and lighter.

Easy to use

Using Revo Uninstaller is very simple. As soon as its installed, the main interface displays which programs are installed. Right click on the icon for options and information, or simply select the one you want to remove and Revo Uninstaller performs a very through removal process, including making a backup point in case anything goes wrong or it removes something you don't want it to.

Revo Uninstaller delves deep into your Registry to remove all entries and other temporary files that most other uninstallers leave behind. It uses a wizard approach - at each step, Revo Uninstaller prompts you to select which files you want to remove. The app also has two alternative ways of removing programs - Hunter and Drag and Drop.

Very stubborn apps

Hunter Mode is perfect for those programs that really don't want to make a move. You take the little target icon that appears on your desktop, and place it over the program you want to remove. As the world of P2P TV continues its expansion, new kid on the block is TvAnts. The increasing unreliability of its Chinese cousin PPLive means that increasing numbers of users are changing to this simple but highly effective alternative.

Installing TvAnts is fortunately pretty simple as everything is in Japanese – it's simply a case of clicking on 'Ok' a few times. The channel list appears in a simple window and you can reveal more by clicking 'Renew'. TvAnts's channel list is a bizarre mix of Japanese, public and private channels. If you want to find out how American troops keep up their morale in Iraq, check out 'TV Pentagon' (the US army's official channel) or if you’re looking for something a bit more scenic, there’s 'TV Canada Tourism'.

Streaming is steady once TvAnts gets going and image quality is as good as anything you’ll get on PPLive. There are literally hundreds of channels to choose from although most are obviously of little interest to English viewers. TvAnts is actually a project of Zhejiang University hence the mainly Asian channels. Its popularity lies in the fact that like most P2P TV apps, the channels broadcast live European football like The Premiership and La Liga.

Other channels in TvAnts include music, movies, news and fashion, mostly from Asian sources. Most of this can be found on Shanghai TV, Gungdong TV and Goal TV. Schedules can be found on various P2P forums around the net such as Free Football and you’ll certainly need them to get the most out of TvAnts.

Note that you may sometimes receive a "license expired" warning in TVAnts. Reinstalling the application doesn't work. You need to fully uninstall it first, most importantly removing the registry entries for TVAnts. I recommend using Revo Uninstaller for this. Then all you need to do is reinstall it.
