You don’t have to do anything apart from running CrystalDiskInfo in order to have a health status report, stating temperature level, error rate, spin-up time and lots of other information which might be useful to know, especially for tech-savvy users.

Even if you are not tech-savvy, you might still find it cheerful to see written in a glossy blue box that your hard disk status is ‘Good’.

Unfortunately, there is no interaction with CrystalDiskInfo, it’s just a window with data and you can’t do much else with those.

There is a graph display, but it doesn’t seem particularly easy to understand it, if and when it works.

Although the figures given by CrystalDiskInfo can be hard to be understand for non tech-savvy users, you can still find out more about the technical characteristics of your hard disk and know easily if everything is ok with it.

The main interface of SpeedFan can be intimidating at first but once you get past the deluge of data, you're greeted with a very powerful application that can help you troubleshoot the most difficult PC problems. SpeedFan offers more functionality and information than even your PC's BIOS can.

While SpeedFan may be intimidating to use at first, it offers a bunch of warnings by default that alert less-advanced users to the dangers of messing around inside the program. Currently is a Chrome extension that gives weather reports with every new tab. Currently will keep you updated with projected weather in your location or from around the world. This basic forecast extension doesn’t have many bells and whistles, but it’s still handy for preparing for the week.

Features

Currently provides the date, time, and weather forecast for the next five days. All of Currently’s data comes from Wunderground. While the website has detailed information about climate, Currently only provides weather conditions and temperature. The extension omits information such as wind speed, precipitation, humidity, and cloud cover.

Currently automatically finds weather according to your IP address location, however you can freely set which city and country is displayed. You can also easily switch back to the default Chrome page to see your most visited apps and links. This is a nice touch that makes it unnecessary to ever disable the extension.

Usability

Currently contains only three buttons within the lower right corner: a link to Wunderground, a tab to Chrome’s default new page, and a settings menu. Currently has settings to alter the system, layout, and style. You can change the temperature between Fahrenheit and Celsius, twelve or twenty four hour clocks, and the city you want displayed.

In the layout page you can toggle animations and if the clock shows seconds. Within the style tab there are tabs to select text/icon and background color. One downside is an annoying bug where setting color will reset the city and vice versa. You will always need to set both when you want to only update one. The extension is overall minimal and intuitive.

Quality

Currently’s appearance is very simple. The text and icons are set to white or black, while the background can be among nine mellow colors. The background will adjust slightly to best contrast against the text color. Currently uses icons to display the weather.

If you aren’t familiar with each icon you’ll need to hover over them to show an overlay. Thankfully, popups, transitions, and other animations are fast and smooth. You will generally not experience performance problems with Currently.

Conclusion

Currently is a nice Chrome extension to quickly find out the weather for the next few days. It lacks more detailed climate information, which would be very helpful in planning out your week. With a simple design and access to the default page, Currently is still a handy extension to any Chrome browser.

A majority of people won't need the power of Photoshop to edit a few photos. Apps like Fotor give users a great way to perform simple edits to photos. Like most photo editing apps these days, Fotor includes a bunch of retro filters, a tilt-shift option, and the ability to add text.

Basic options like brightness, contrast, temperature, and sharpen are all there and controllable by touch-friendly sliders. Fotor adds a 1-Tap Enhance feature to make things even simpler. The entire interface is touch friendly but its home screen is unnecessarily complicated.

Filters look good and performing edits are a breeze. After you're done with your edits, you can save the photo to your drive but there's no ability to share to social networks, which is very disappointing.

Overall, Fotor is a solid photo editing application for basic filters and touch-ups.

Most good PCs and laptops have a fan which automatically controls overheating and regulates temperature but this is not always 100% reliable, especially when you've got lots of external devices connected. The good thing about HWMonitor is that it gives you an instant overview of your PC's vital power and heat stats while at the same time, remaining very light and not adding to the problem. In fact, it doesn't require any installation at all and can be run simply from the .EXE file. HWMonitor does not copy any files into the directory or edit the registry in any way. HWMonitor probably shows you far more stats that it needs to in reality - I mean, who really needs to know the temperature of their graphics card? It would have been useful if HWMonitor had included some kind of basic and advanced view to prevent you getting overwhelmed with data but at least the info is there if you really need it.

If you're worried that you're fan is not doing it's job properly or your PC is getting disconcertingly hot, then HWMonitor is the ultimate monitoring tool.

The main interface of AccuWeather for Windows 8 is beautiful but a complete resource hog. Current weather conditions are animated in the background. This may be beautiful but it does take a toll on system performance. There is an option to disable it but it may not be obvious at first glance. Open up the Charms Bar, hit "Settings" and then options.

AccuWeather for Windows 8 presents a ton of information. There's temperature, wind speed, pressure, and much more. Users can also read or watch weather related articles and videos. Unfortunately, the articles are just simple links to websites and aren't formatted for the app, making it a clunky looking and feeling experience. The videos in the AccuWeather for Windows 8 app don't play full screen, which can be distracting.

While other weather apps like WeatherBug display the most important information up front, AccuWeather for Windows 8 tries a bit harder to be more visually appealing but suffers somewhat in usability. WeatherBug is simpler to read and has a less busy interface. Still, AccuWeather for Windows 8 offers videos and articles, making it a more comprehensive weather app. AccuWeather for Windows 8 can also live on your lock screen, giving you updated weather information while WeatherBug uses notifications instead.

Overall, AccuWeather for Windows 8 is a good weather app but needs to make its features and interface simpler.

Notifications in WeatherBug are a great feature. You can set it up to alert you for certain weather conditions. If it's raining, it'll pop up a notification, even when you're in another app. It's a shame that WeatherBug doesn't incorporate any weather news, which is handy for tracking big storms.

Maps is a welcomed feature in WeatherBug as it shows current conditions in an area. The map is responsive and you can toggle different types of information like satellite, humidity, pressure, and temperature.

It would have been nice to see some weather live streams and video content to see how weather conditions are around the world. The lack of live video streams and news seems like a missed opportunity for WeatherBug.

Still, WeatherBug provides a soild app for checking conditions and looking up forecasts. Just don't expect more than that.
