AMD is set to unveil a groundbreaking display technology for gaming called FreeSync Panel Replay, and its implementation could be one of the major advancements in the world of computing, particularly in terms of energy efficiency.

FreeSync Panel Replay from AMD automatically reduces the refresh rate to conserve energy and lessen the GPU workload.

This feature is similar to the Panel Self Refresh (PSR) option found in various mobile devices. FreeSync Panel Replay operates in such a way that when the screen content remains static, the refresh rate is automatically lowered to decrease power consumption.

For instance, the ProMotion displays on the iPhone 14 Pro reduce the refresh rate to 1 Hz when the device is in idle mode. The FreeSync Panel Replay will function similarly, but for monitors and laptop screens.

This technology will first come to Linux

This information has been revealed through AMD’s Linux kernel graphics driver, which has added a “FreeSync Panel Replay” feature to the driver’s display code.

According to AMD, the main reason for introducing this feature is to reduce the GPU workload when the user doesn’t change the displayed content.

AMD believes that even when the content on the screen remains constant, the GPU continues to send the same frame repeatedly to the display. Performing these redundant actions increases the system’s power consumption and essentially serves no purpose.

AMD argues that FreeSync Panel Replay is a superior function to PSR as it can maintain synchronization between the source and the receiver, resulting in fewer delays.

Currently, there is no information available regarding how FreeSync Panel Replay technology may impact power consumption or display quality. However, it is expected that the company will soon reveal more details about the new FreeSync technology. Let’s await the next conference by Lisa Su.
