Having lunch with an episode of The Simpsons playing in the background has become a tradition for thousands of Spaniards. Despite being an all-American show, The Simpsons have managed to resonate with Spanish culture like few others. So much so that someone used artificial intelligence to ask which Simpsons character would correspond to each autonomous community.
The results were revealed on the TV program “Aruser@s” on La Sexta, hosted by Alfonso Arús. The artificial intelligence has assigned a Simpsons character to each autonomous community “according to the character” of its inhabitants.
Among the most curious assignments, Bart Simpson corresponds to Madrid, and Homer represents Andalusia. It is also noteworthy that Mr. Burns is associated with Castilla y León, symbolizing “the region’s economic power.” We are not sure whether to laugh or cry at the results, but they certainly fuel the debate. Like any artificial intelligence, it perpetuates harmful stereotypes and prejudices for Spain.
AI as an answer to “what if?”
Although the debate about the ethics and use of artificial intelligence is still ongoing, some use it to answer questions that previously had no clear answer. How would the children of certain celebrities look? What would be the ideal cast to remake Twilight today?
In the case of The Simpsons, artificial intelligence (in this case Midjourney) has also imagined how they would look in real life. A Reddit user named @bwbyh recreated them, and the result can only be described as ‘unsettling’. And if you don’t believe it, you can always judge the results for yourself.
