A bleak future is looming, or at least that’s what billionaires believe. Who knows, they may have a point. It’s not hard to come to that conclusion when you consider what’s happening in the world: wars, resource shortages, economic and social crises… Are these the reasons why the wealthy are buying bunkers and hiring military personnel for their protection?

The alleged end of the world is a situation that the wealthy increasingly see as imminent, and that’s why they want to prepare properly. Douglas Rushkoff, a globally recognized writer, intellectual, and cyberpunk theorist, has been studying this phenomenon in-depth and explains how the rich are becoming more isolated from the real danger posed by their actions. While many millionaires claim to want to save the world, the reality is far from these supposed noble actions. In the end, they all seek to protect themselves from the harm they know they are causing and want to escape from the rest of humanity, as Rushkoff explains.

However, escaping and protecting themselves is not enough; they want to do it with all possible luxuries. Some companies like Rising S Bunkers or Terravivos have seen a considerable increase in demand for shelters. Back in 2016, Rising S Company experienced a 700% increase in bunker orders. Just to give you an example, the war in Ukraine led to a 90% increase in bunker requests in Spain, according to Underground Building.

Furthermore, these places spare no expense. They have massive food storage, earthquake-resistant capabilities, water and air filtration systems… not even a nuclear attack could penetrate them (or so they claim).

Vivos, a California-based company, offers large underground apartments converted from warehouses and Cold War-era shelters for sale. And if we go to the Czech Republic, The Oppidum advertises its shelter as the world’s largest billionaire bunker. Some of its major selling points include simulated natural light and being an “impregnable” place.
