There are people who dream of seeing Henry Cavill, the fittest English actor in the entire film industry, as the most famous spy of all time: the unmatched and elegant James Bond. There were options for that to happen 20 years ago.

As widely reported, Cavill auditioned for Bond in Casino Royale. The actor, who was one of the stars considered in the early 2000s, was dismissed for being too young at that time, and the role went to Daniel Craig.

Casino Royale director Martin Campbell recently spoke about Cavill’s audition for James Bond to Express UK, describing it as “tremendous” and revealing that the actor would have been a great 007 “if Daniel [Craig] didn’t exist.”

Once Daniel Craig is gone, are there any options for Cavill?

Now that Craig has left the role, Henry Cavill is among names like Aaron Taylor-Johnson, James Norton, Papa Essiedu, and Regé-Jean Page, among many others, who frequently top the lists of possibilities.

Although Cavill has been careful not to talk at length about Bond and whether he is currently involved in any behind-the-scenes conversations, there are some doubts about whether the casting could still happen.

Normally, actors play Bond for the first time when they are around 30 years old, allowing them to portray the role in at least three movies. The fact that Cavill is now 40 years old does not exclude him from the race, but it has also been reported that franchise producers are looking for someone a little younger.

Another factor against Henry Cavill is how busy he is as an actor. It has been proven that playing Bond is very demanding and requires a lot of time, and with Henry Cavill currently involved in bringing a Warhammer 40K TV show to life, as well as being linked to projects like Highlander, it is not clear if the actor would be able to make the kind of contractual commitments that 007 producers might be looking for.

Although Henry Cavill is not yet ruled out, it seems that his chances of becoming James Bond decrease every year that goes by.
